Do I Need a Scan Before Seeing a Physio?
Not necessarily.
For many knee problems, a detailed history and physical examination provide enough information to begin treatment.
Your physiotherapist will assess things such as knee movement, strength and how the knee responds to relevant activities. Depending on your problem, this might include squatting, walking, stairs or movements related to your sport.
If your presentation suggests that further investigation or medical review may be appropriate, we'll explain that to you.
How Is Knee Pain Treated?
There isn't one treatment that works for every knee.
Your programme will depend on your symptoms, goals and what we identify during assessment.
Treatment may include hands-on techniques to help with pain or stiffness, but rehabilitation will often form a significant part of treatment.
This could involve progressively strengthening the muscles around the knee and hip, improving tolerance to activity and gradually returning to the movements that currently cause difficulty.
For someone with arthritis, the goal might be walking and stairs with greater confidence. For a runner or footballer, the end point may involve returning to much higher loads.
The rehabilitation should reflect what you need your knee to do.
